The creation of a new Urban Village in Hereford moved a step closer last week as Sanctuary Group's outline planning application to build affordable new homes on the Merton Meadow site, off Blackfriars Road, was approved.
The site is currently a car park adjacent to Hereford United's football ground.
The application went before the city’s planning committee on Wednesday
(7 August), and approval was given for the leading housing and care
provider to move forward with plans to build up to 192 units, including
an Extra Care facility, under the first phase of the Urban Village
project.
Jonathan Mullins, Sanctuary’s head of development for the Midlands, said: “We are delighted to get approval for our outline plans for the Urban Village. This is a fantastic location in the heart of Hereford and we hope to maximize its potential by building high quality, energy efficient homes that are conveniently placed for city centre living, yet still affordable for local people.”
He explained that, as with all Sanctuary Group developments, the plans would also look to create training and job opportunities.
He added: “We are proud to be part of this regeneration project and will certainly be looking to making a positive contribution in terms of providing employment opportunities within the local community. This will include encouraging our contractors to recruit locally, offer apprenticeships on site and use local suppliers and resources wherever possible.”
Sanctuary is hoping to submit a detailed planning application later in the year.
