Layton hopes for Bigger Budget

One of the problems with running youth teams in any small club is the amount of money available. Hereford United's youth team manager John Layton is in this position but he's hopeful extra funding will be forthcoming shortly.

"We are waiting for the Premier League to release some money," said Layton.

"They have to agree with the Leagues below them on how they are going to release it for youth development over the next five years.

"The amount of funding depends on what type of acadamy we apply for. The goalposts keep moving and we didn't get acadamy or centre of excellence status this year.

"But the criteria should be out by Christmas and then we can apply for either catagory three or four.

"Catagory three could be up to £150,000, the club would also have to contribute.

"Catagory four, which is like we do now, would be £70,000."

Layton only started working with the youth teams last April and he admits he missed out on getting some players to join his squads for this season.

"We're up against it this first season. I've got five scholars and the rest are college kids and local lads as and when they can come in for training. Most of our opponents can bring 15 or 16 scholars to play against us.

"I'll be looking for 8 or 9 scholars to add to my 5 that I have for next season. That will be 14 or 15 full-timers.

"I'm going to start looking for scholars shortly rather than after the end of the season which will make a big difference. There are exit trials in two weeks time."

Layton says he pleased to be working with Hereford United again.

"I'm really enjoying it. It's nice to go into the ground every day. It's a pleasure.

"You get your ups and downs but that's football."
