So What Now?

Mike Margetts ponders the ramifications of the pointless start to the season:

With just three league games played, no goals scored and not a single point on the board, it doesn’t require a genius to work out that Hereford United are already in serious trouble.

Add to the mix the injuries suffered during the Macclesfield debacle to an already thin squad and the immediate future looks bleak indeed.

So what now? No-one can deny that Jamie Pitman and his charges deserve great credit for their second half of season recovery earlier this year but that was solely about survival: there was hope among the faithful that things would improve this term. It appears, however, that this is unlikely to be the case.

As Organic Bull recently pointed out on this site the 55 per cent salary cap has led to unfortunate restraints on Jamie Pitman’s efforts to strengthen the squad but unless something changes pretty soon Hereford United could well be in a position after ten games that is as bad, if not worse, than last season’s nightmare under Simon Davey.

Of equal concern must be attendances which now threaten to dive below 1,500 (or worse).

I am not sure what Messrs Keyte, Russon and Pitman can do in practical terms to turn things around yet again but without some sort of drastic action sooner rather than later the Blue Square Premier will be beckoning the Bulls long before the first chill winds of winter are upon us.

I think most fans half suspected that the current squad might struggle again but to concede seven goals in two games to the likes of Morecambe and Macclesfield has been a bitter pill to swallow. Let’s hope that things can only get better for these are, indeed, anxious times…
