Pitman after Today's Defeat

Jamie Pitman spoke to BBC Hereford and Worcester after this afternoon's game at Southend.

"First half we were poor, we never really got near anyone, whether that was first-day nerves or whatever you can put it down to, there's no excuses for that," said the Hereford United manager.

"But second half, when we got near people and closer, worked them, then we competed probably more so than not. We just needed a little bit better cutting edge at the end to maybe create a chance or two.

"But they defended well to be fair, they came under a bit of pressure and got some great blocks in and we had to do the same on one or two occasions in the second half. We were probably the better side in the second half, they were in the first half."

Pitman was pleased with the performance of captain Stefan Stam.

"Considering he has not played much, he always very calm.

"First half him and Greeny needed to get a bit tighter to them. Once they got tight we got the ball back better and we passed it a little bit better than we did first half."

Striker Yoann Arquin came on with 20 minutes left.

"He's bright, he's got to learn the game a little bit.

"The biggest thing is that he competes, he tries to get in the box."

Former Bull Danny Williams was on the bench.

"Non-contract, obviously things are tight at the moment at the club and Danny is living in the area. He adds a number to the bench.

"You read their programme, they have 29 players. I've got 15 including the two that are on the transfer list."
