Gavin Williams Joins Yeovil

Former Hereford United midfielder Gavin Williams has joined Yeovil Town for the fourth time. Merthyr born Williams was recently released by Bristol Rovers.

Williams orginally joined Yeovil from cash-strapped Hereford United in May 2002 after six years at Edgar Street.

Manager Graham Turner, who had just offered his resignation, did make Williams an offer to stay with the Bulls.

"We have had a written offer from Chester for him," Turner told BBC Hereford and Worcester at the time.

"We have had a written from another conference club who he is talking to next week but he has been back up to see us. Obviously he wants to know about the stability of the club, obviously he wants to know what my intentions are and I think if it can settle down then I would not rule out the possibility of Gavin resigning for us but we have competition from two other conference clubs who are bigger payers than us but I think Gavin has been settled and I think at the back of his mind he would like to stay at Hereford but obviously money as far as players are concerned is an important factor and we have to face the possibility that Gavin might be playing in the conference next season for somebody else. But if he is the club will get a fee for him."

The fee was eventually agreed at £22,500 plus a 25% sell on clause.

"It was disappointing to lose Gavin - and for such a small fee - but he was out of the contract here and if you look at the deal he has been offered by Yeovil it's quite startling for a Conference club," said Turner.

"If we hadn't agreed a fee with Yeovil, his price would have been settled by a transfer tribunal - and we couldn't afford to take that risk in light of past experiences, particularly with Dean Smith."

The Glovers sold him to West Ham for £250,000 in December 2004 from which the Bulls received around £55,000. He then moved to Ipswich in January 2006 for circa £300,000.

In June 2008 he moved back to the West Country and Bristol City. However Williams found it difficult to command a regular position in the City starting eleven and went on loan twice to Yeovil.

Last January he moved across Bristol to the Gasheads.
