Final Livestock Market in Hereford Today

Today sees the final livestock market in the centre of Hereford. From next Wednesday the market will be held on a new site just off the Roman Road to the north-west of the city.

There has been a market in Hereford for around 150 years and for many years has taken place close to Hereford United's Edgar Street Stadium.

"Importantly, it will keep a lot of traffic away from the city centre and releases this site to be transformed into much needed city centre facilities,” said Roger Phillips, former leader of Herefordshire Council.

The site is part of what was known as the Edgar Street Grid.

"This is an historic day for Hereford as the market’s move paves the way for a major city centre development which will bring a six-screen cinema, a Waitrose food store, a department store and further retail outlets and restaurants into the heart of Hereford," commented Jonathan Bretherton chief executive of Hereford Futures.

"There has been a lot of talk over this development and many people have said it would never happen. That makes the final day of sales on the old cattle market site all the more significant as the developers intend to start demolition later this year and construction should begin in early 2012."
