FL Agree New TV Deal

The Football League have agreed a new TV deal with Sky - but the money is down on the previous deal.

The current deal was a joint bid from Sky and the BBC worth £88million a season - totalling £264million over three season - but the new deal is worth just £195million over three years when it becomes active for the 2012/3 season.

Sky will show 75 live FL games - adding the ten BBC live matches to their previous commitment - as well as Carling Cup and Johnstones Paint Trophy matches. In a press statement FL Chairman Greg Clarke said: "This has been a challenging climate in which to negotiate television rights, given the state of the economy and the lack of competitive tension in the sports broadcasting market.

"I am confident that our clubs will take heart from seeing such a significant ongoing investment in their competitions, despite a reduced level of broadcasting income, as it provides financial certainty in uncertain times."

The press statement says that negotiations are ongoing for free-to-air highlights coverage, but that the Sky deal includes internet coverage meaning that any free-to-air provider is unlikely to be able to show highlights on their website.

Update: The BBC have released a statement: "Given the current financial climate and the internal strategic review being carried out through Delivering Quality First, we were not in a position to be able to make a competitive bid for the Football League live TV broadcast rights.

"We look forward to continuing our coverage of the Football League to the end of the 2011-2012 season when our contract expires."
