Smith Gets Longer Saddlers Role

Former Bulls captain Dean Smith has been appointed as Walsall's manager until the end of the season.

The Saddlers reportedly had 90 applicants for the job after sacking Chris Hutchings nearly three weeks ago but opted for coach Smith, who told the local press: "It is an honour to be given the job on a full-time basis. I’ve really enjoyed the last couple of weeks and I am fully-focused on the task at hand. It is a fantastic opportunity for me and it is one in which I’m relishing.

"I’m looking forward to the challenge and I am confident that, together – players, staff and supporters – we can achieve our goals."

Smith has drawn two and lost one of his three games in charge so far. He joined the Bulls from Walsall in 1994, making 142 appearances, before leaving for Leyton Orient three years later. He returned to the Bescot in 2009 as youth team coach after spending time as assistant boss at Orient.
