Simpson has been told there is no money to improve the squad in January and that he will have to offload players first to make changes. Southend have announced that assistant boss Tommy Widdrington has left the club with immediate effect. Boss Paul Sturrock reported that Widdrington had missed last night's game for 'personal reasons'.
