Colchester - Another Tough Fixture says Davey

It's Colchester in the Carling Cup on Tuesday at Edgar Street and Hereford United manager Simon Davey is under no illusion that this will be a tough game.

"Colchester will be another tough fixture," Davey told BBC Hereford and Worcester.

"We played two first division sides in pre-season so we know what teams are about in that division but it's going to be difficult.

"When you play teams from the division above, it's always going to be hard and they are always going to ask you questions."

Yesterday Colchester made the long trip to Exeter and came away with a 2-2 draw.

Manager John Ward seems pleased with the outcome. Anthony Wordsworth scored twice in quick succession in the first half. The Bulls will need to watch him, assuming he plays on Tuesday.

A couple of the Colchester players received knocks during the game.

"It's recovery time now. We'll look after them and get them ready for Tuesday," said Ward.

How seriously both managers will take this Carling Cup game remains to be seen but with a small squad Davey might give starts to a couple of players who didn't feature at Crewe. However he has vowed to put a strong team out.

"We'll be putting our strongest team out," said Davey.

"I'm not one of those managers who rests his players for cup games. I'll make sure the strongest team I can field, I'll field it.

"It's important for clubs like ourselves to have a good cup run."

One player expected to get a game is keeper Dan Connor who has played well in the pre-season friendlies.

Meanwhile whilst Tuesday will be the first home match of the season, there is a league fixture at Edgar Street on Saturday when Gillingham are the visitors and some supporters may feel that, of the two, the Gillingham game is more appealing.

Having said that last season Charlton were the visitors to Edgar Street for the first round of the Carling Cup and 2017 watched that game.

"The Hereford fans love a cup game whether it be Carling Cup or FA Cup and I would be looking for between 3,000 and 4,000," said vice-chairman Tim Russon.

Should the gate approach that number, it will be a tremendous turn-out.
