For reasons best known to the PA staff in the media box at Edgar Street, the last piece of music played as fans leave the stadium is currently Wooly Bully by Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs.
Whilst Hereford United are known as the Bulls, their supporters are sometimes referred to as the sheep-shaggers, so maybe the choice of music is quite apt.
Yet some might say that as there are few sheep in Herefordshire the term is unfair.
Others might retort that as Herefordshire is next to Wales which is full of sheep there is a connection. Afterall Herefordshire, which is part of Mercia, was under Welsh control during certain times in the Middle Ages.
Whatever the connection here are the words of Wooly Bully:
Uno, dos, one, two, tres, quatro
Matty told Hatty about a thing she saw.
Had two big horns and a wooly jaw.
Wooly bully, wooly bully.
Wooly bully, wooly bully, wooly bully.
Hatty told Matty, "Let's don't take no chance.
Let's not be L-seven, come and learn to dance."
Wooly bully, wooly bully
Wooly bully, wooly bully, wooly bully.
Matty told Hatty, "That's the thing to do.
Get you someone really to pull the wool with you."
Wooly bully, wooly bully.
Wooly bully, wooly bully, wooly bully.
Meanwhile Terry Jenkins, the well-known Herefordshire darts player, has used Wooly Bully as his music when he comes on stage at a tournament.
Finally the record is now 45 years old. When released in the UK it was heavily promoted by Radio Caroline. The BBC reputedly banned it until it made the top twenty.
Postcript: Wooly Bully isn't the only 'animal' song played at Edgar Street - Me and You and a Dog named Boo recorded by Lobo and released in 1971 has featured on the play-list for many years.
Second Postcript: Since this article was published one Hereford United supporter has suggested that the track Bulls on Parade by rage against the machine should be played. However it's uncertain whether this would be appreciated by the VP's amidst others.
