Stockport are to be taken over by a consortium led by former Man City striker Jim Melrose, the Manchester Evening News is reporting.
A second bidder withdrew from the race today, citing a lack of finances, leaving Melrose as the sole bidder after a string of other bidders fell by the wayside over the past seven weeks. Melrose, who counted Wolves, Leeds, and Celtic amongst his previous clubs as a player, had previously been linked to a takeover of Macclesfield.
Melrose has been, more recently, making his way as a football agent. He is noted as being the first player to bring civil court charges against an opponent, earning £250 for a GBH claim against Chris Kamara whilst in the twilight of his career at Shrewsbury.
The club is expected to make an announcement tomorrow.
