John Schofield has left Walsall just days after being put in temporary charge.
A club statement said: John Schofield has today been relieved of his duties as Caretaker Manager and the club would like to place on record our appreciation for his work, since arriving at the Banks’s Stadium in the summer.
According to the Express and Star his departure has fuelled speculation that a new manager may be appointed before Saturday's game against Hereford United.
Former manager Jimmy Mullen was sacked just over a week ago.
UPDATE 8pm: Sky Sports say that a permanent successor to Mullen will be named at 10am on Tuesday.
Several names have been linked with the position, including Alan Buckley, Geraint Williams and Chris Hutchings.
