Season starts with victory

Hereford United got their preperations under-way for the 2008/2009 season with a 10-0 victory over local side Ledbury Town at New Street this evening. An approximate figure of 400 were in attendance to see The Bulls field two different sides in either half, with a number of trialists trying their best to impress Graham Turner.

The first-half was all United, as they went down the slope. In the opening minutes, Steve Guinan smashed the post, but soon made up for the miss by lobbing the helpless Ledbury' keeper. Kris Taylor doubled the advantage with a fine curling free-kick before Guinan added a second from the penalty spot after being barged over in the box. Taylor turned provider for Ben Smith as he tapped in from close-range, before Ghana born trialist Bradley Hudson-Adoi tucked past the goalkeeper from inside the area. Smith scored the goal of the game from the edge of the area as he met a pass from the left to strike in off the bar with his left-foot. Just before the half-time whistle, Matty Done got in on the act as he finished calmly with his left peg after some decent dribbling.

The second-half saw a complete change in line ups, the majority of which can be found at the bottom of this report. Craig Moses tapped in from strike-partners Simon Johnson's pass, before Johnson himself twisted and turned in the box before firing into the net to make it 9-0 Ledbury went close through their number 10 up front, as his rising shot narrowly missed the top corner, but it was Sam Gwynne who had the final say as United reached double figures, as he touched in Moses's goal-bound effort.

As is the case with United, and their pre-season opener, it was a case of getting a little bit of match fitness against a much lower-graded opposition. A number of trialists were on show, although names for these were hard to find! However, new signings Gary Breen looked calm in defence, and was leading from the back, whilst Done looked a danger with his close-control and pace on the left-wing. In the second-half, Toumani Diagouraga looked in good form with some fine control and passing, whilst Clint Easton and Richard Rose continued what they had finished last-season with some encouraging link-up down the left-hand side.

Next up is a trip to Kidderminster Harriers on Monday; for some, the trial period may be over tonight if they didn't impress whilst others may be given the game to continue their probe to win over Turner. Fingers crossed there will be a few more signings too, with the goalkeeping position looking to be the most important with neither Nick Jordan, or the second-half trialist looking too confident. The expected departure of Trent McClenahan has also left a void at right-back, and this will also need to be addressed.

Hereford First Half XI: Jordan, Read, Breen, Broadhurst, Taylor, McLeod, Smith, Forbes, Done, Guinan, Hudson-Odoi.

Hereford Second Half XI: Sansom, Thomas, Beckwith, Sako, Rose, Gwynne, Diagouraga, Fowler, Easton, Moses, Johnson.

Former Manchester City defender Gary Breen led the back-line well.
