Directors keep Cheltenham Town in Business

One of the Cheltenham Town directors wrote an article about attendances and investment in their programme for the game at Whaddon Road against Southend last Friday.

Arthur Hayward makes several points in his column some of which could also refer to Hereford United.

He mentions that the playing surface, for the time of year, is in good condition and 'watching football at Cheltenham is now exciting and entertaining.'

"This would normally get more people through the gate but then we have to remember we live in Cheltenhamshire," wrote Hayward.

"Again with my finance hat on I have to again say how disappointed we are with the total lack of support we receive in general from the Cheltenham public.

"I am not talking about you, our loyal fans. I am talking about the rest as I'm sure most of you share our disappointment that we are bottom of the attendance table in the league.

"I am often asked by other clubs how we cope with such small crowd levels? Well we do not, there is heavy investment by certain members of the Board and without this we would be in deep trouble.

"The losses for the current year will be larger than those we will be reporting for season 2006/2007 by a significant amount. This is despite the money we have received in the transfer market so something has to happen on and off the playing field."

Hayward describes several ways the club is trying to increase income off the pitch and to improve their community programme, which they hope will entice more people through the turnstiles, but admits that there will have to be more investment from outside their normal revenue streams and this will come from certain board members.

In some ways the situation is similar to that at Edgar Street - the disappointing attendances and the lack of support from business in and around Herefordshire but in contrast to Cheltenham, there is no investment in Hereford United from any of the directors.

Perhaps this is a good thing as Graham Turner has ensured that Hereford lives within its means. With directors who have large pockets there must be the temptation to tap them every so often instead of ensuring the money is available within the club.

There's little doubt that most clubs need to take any income they can from, within reason, whatever source they can. If Hereford United do gain promotion to League One, it will be so important to maximise both on the pitch and off the pitch revenue if they are to have any realistic change of staying there.

Having a situation as at Cheltenham where continuing losses are covered by directors is not an ideal way to run a football club.
