Chester Exceed Salary Cap

The Football League have officially informed Chester City that they have breached the salary capping rules currently in force.

The club must now take action to reduce their spending or face penalties. Both Sean Hessey and Lee Steele, both bit-part players last season, have been transfer listed with chairman Stephen Vaughan adding: "We now also have a situation with midfield player Glenn Cronin who missed virtually all of last season with a broken metatarsal, and now unfortunately he has suffered a similar injury which is expected to also sideline him for the majority of his campaign. It could well be that we have to discuss this situation with the player, medical advisors, and the PFA to review the problem."

Cronin is expected to retire from the professional game, while the club have acknowledged interest in Steele from one League Two and a pair of Conference sides. The club struggled to stay within the wage cap last season, giving themselves less than £100 per week breathing space at one stage.
