Barnet plan £7m redevelopment

Hereford United's first away trip this season is to Underhill, the sloping home of Barnet, which like Edgar Street is overdue a make-up.

The club, which is situated just inside the M25, have been looking to move to a new site for some years but haven't had any success. Relations with the local council have often become frayed with statements released by both parties that have often inflammed the situation.

According to this morning's Times 'the club have submitted a planning application to the local council for a £7 million redevelopment of Underhill to bring it up to Football League requirements. The scheme incorporates the construction of new stands at either end of the ground and the purchase of houses in an adjoining road for £4 million. The club have been looking for sites for a new stadium, but need to have 2,000 covered seats at their ground by the end of the season.'

"If this application is successful, we will no longer be under threat of expulsion. We remain committed to finding a site where we can build a modern stadium befitting the 21st century," said Tony Kleanthous, the Barnet chairman.
