Smith Believes Weymouth Can Follow Yeovil

Former Bulls midfielder Ben Smith, who chose Weymouth over a return to the Bulls, believed Weymouth can make the Football League like Yeovil did.

Speaking to the Dorset Echo, Smith said: "Weymouth reminds me of what Yeovil were like when I was there seven or eight years ago. In those days we were playing in front of 1,500 people just as the club started to take off - these days Yeovil get crowds of 9,000 and are playing in Coca-Cola League One. It might take a while but I don't see why we can't do the same thing as Yeovil in the coming years."

"Should we win promotion this season, it would be a big ask for us to go up again into the Football League next year but long-term that has got to be the aim. When you look at the make up of the Conference, there are not too many teams bigger than Weymouth. Apart from Exeter City and perhaps a couple of others, Weymouth have the set-up, geographical location and catchment area to be a huge club."

"Those are things two of my previous teams, Yeovil and Hereford, used to great effect and hopefully we can do the same."

Smith regrets leaving Yeovil in the first place:"I had three and a half great years at Yeovil and I really wish I hadn't left. It was the right decision at the time but to be honest I feel like I'm Yeovil's fifth Beatle - leaving just before all the success came along.

His reasons for joining Weymouth came straight out of the Andy Tretton excuses book: "I've always wanted to play in claret and blue. That ambition has always been based on West Ham United though, so I guess Weymouth are second best on that front. I've played the majority of my career at Conference National level and, as I said earlier, I want to get back there with Weymouth."

"On a personal basis, it's also great being back in the West Country because it's a lovely part of the world. I've just bought a house in Weymouth with my girlfriend, who is job-hunting in the town, and once the paperwork goes through, I'm looking forward to settling in."
