Fleetwood speaks about his departure from Cardiff

Staurt Fleetwood has told the South Wales Echo about the way his career and that of Cameron Jerome have taken different paths recently. An edited version of the article by Terry Phillips are below:

Under previous manager, Lennie Lawrence, Fleetwood was tipped to become one of the top strikers at the club, but then Lawrence was sacked and David Jones had different ideas. Fleetwood was deemed to be surplus to requirements whilst Jerome is doing very well at present.

"Good luck to Cameron. I really want him to do well," said Fleetwood. "Of course I wanted to be in the first team scoring goals, but that wasn't how it worked out.

"That's football. I have to accept it and get on with my career.

"It happens at every club. I might have been playing had Lennie stayed, but he didn't and the new manager wasn't keen on me.

"That's happened to countless players at countless clubs over the years. The only thing I can do is start again elsewhere and prove to Dave Jones he should have kept me.

"I have faith in my ability, but the only way to prove I can play and score goals is out on the pitch."

Fleetwood has signed for Hereford until the end of the season. He refused an offer from Scottish club Hamilton Academicals.

"I thought long and hard about what to do and I didn't say no to Hamilton lightly. In the end I felt it was better to stay in the south, but if an offer came from Hamilton again I would certainly consider it.

"My aim right now is to play first-team football. That's what I need - badly. Reserve team games are fine, but every player wants to be in a first team."

The Gloucester-born striker, who was full-time at Cardiff for three seasons, was rated by Ninian Park coaching staff as quicker than Robert Earnshaw at the same age when he was 16 - running 11.3 seconds for the 100 metres.

He has now linked up with another ex-Bluebirds player in Cardiff-born Ryan Green, who took Ryan Giggs' record as Wales' youngest ever full international when he won the first of two caps, against Malta.

Fleetwood was a talented rugby union fly-half, playing in the Newent team which won the Gloucester Schools Cup, when he decided soccer was the route he wanted to take.

That decision was taken after he fired 104 goals in one season for Newent Youth. He qualifies for Wales because his dad, Keith, was born in St Mellons, in Cardiff, and has Welsh caps at Under-16, 17, 19, 20 and Under-21 levels.
