Cambridge United have received a welcome cash boost following the unexpected debut of former U's keeper John Ruddy for new side Everton at the weekend.
Ruddy, fourth choice at Everton, got a surprise debut after injuries to both Richard Wright and Nigel Martyn meant Iain Turner started Saturday's match at home to Blackburn but Turner, making his own debut in the Premiership, was dismissed after just eight minutes and Ruddy kept a clean sheet for ten man Everton to claim all three points.
Everton players were quick to praise the teenage keeper but the ones celebrating are Cambridge who, needing to find £250,000 to keep themselves alive over the summer, collect a sizeable bonus payment for Ruddy's shock debut just weeks after annoucing a £581,000 loss for last season.
