Guinan feared the worst

Steve Guinan, the ex-Hereford United striker, feared the worst when he was stretchered off during Cheltenham's pre-season friendly with Birmingham City.

The 28-year-old striker thought he could have been facing up to year on the sidelines when he was carried off the field with a knee injury. But the problem is not as bad as first feared and manager John Ward is hopeful his new striker will be fit for the first game of the season against Southend.

Guinan told Cheltenham's official website: "You see, hear and read about these horror stories every week and just hope it never happens to you.

"For a split second I thought, that's it. I've got here and I am on the verge of playing again in the Football League and suddenly it's not going to happen. I really thought I was looking at a year on the sidelines when they carried me off on that stretcher."
