Two spectacular goals from Sohna secured a 2-1 victory at Edgar Street, continuing an impressive run of form under the new manager where the side have picked up 16 points from seven games.
The ex-Cheltenham Town midfielder, who joined the club shortly after Downes’ arrival, said the boss has quickly set the tone with the standards he expects from the squad.
"One thing about the gaffer, he's very demanding. He's very calm, but he doesn't stop demanding.
"Good's never good enough, he always wants more. I think that's good. He's always pushing us."
Some 11 points from safety from Downes arrived, Hereford are now just one point behind Oxford City in 20th with six games in hand.
Sohna admitted he had been surprised by the club’s position in the table when he first arrived.
"We've got a good group of players. I think you've got players with loads of ability and players that can win games.
"I saw that when I came in so I was a bit surprised to see the team where they were, but it's football, things happen and I just came in with a mentality to help the team turn it around.
"I'm thankful since I've been in we've picked up points but we've got to keep going, there's still loads of games to go."
He believes the energy and work rate within the squad are now helping turn things around.
"Looking around the lads, they give 100 per cent from minute one," he said.
"The gaffer keeps demanding that and I think it's showing in our results.
"The energy that we're bringing and putting onto teams, it's causing them problems.
"He's very demanding, but I think he's very good."
Having ended South Shields' 16-game unbeaten run on Saturday, another tough test awaits the Lilywhites on Tuesday as new league leaders AFC Fylde travel to Edgar Street.
Sohna said the squad must maintain the same intensity as they go into five games in 12 days.
The 23-year-old Gloucester-born player said: "It's going to be a tough game, another team that are doing well in the league. We've got to go and give 100% again and bring the same energy.
"It's hard because there's such a short amount of time between games but I think we've got a good squad.
"Everyone can bring something to the team and we've just got to go again on Tuesday and give the fans another good game."
