On This Day In 2002

A look back to Saturday 7th February 2002.

Burton brew up United downfall

Hereford United 1 - 2 Burton Albion

Hereford United's automatic promotion aspirations were dealt another blow as they went down to their third home defeat of the season, losing 2-1 at Edgar Street against Nigel Clough's Burton Albion.

Burton hammered Hereford 4-1 at Eton Park back in September, and have now 'done the double' over a Hereford side unable to break through a strong back-line in difficult cold and windy conditions.

An eventful first half saw both sides look as if they could dominate the game. Rob Purdie broke well in the fourth minute for Steve Guinan to shoot, but the ball was deflected wide, and two minutes later a shot at the other end saw Matt Baker get down low to keep the ball out.

Another good team move for Hereford saw Guinan played in again, but Burton stopper Matt Duke saved with his legs, and David Brown turned well in twelve minutes from inside the D to drive a ball through the defence and onto the post, but it bounced behind for a goal-kick.

Three minutes later, though, Hereford took the lead. Guinan was clipped from behind in the box when through on goal, toppling him, and Tony James' spot-kick went low past Duke to open the scoring.

Burton, though, were not about to lie down, and capitalised on a defensive mix-up on twenty-seven minutes when Tony James and Matt Baker hesitated over a loose ball. Debutant Andy White nipped through to level proceedings as he walked the ball into the net.

United could have gone back in front later in the half, but Danny Williams' shot was blocked by a dominant Duke when one-on-one.

The second half wasn't quite as action-packed, but notable nonetheless. Eleven minutes after the restart, Robbie Talbot, who scored a hatrick against the Bulls back in September, put Burton into the ascendancy when he chipped Matt Baker from the right channel, and from then on, Hereford couldn't get past the Brewers' back-line.

Hereford were dealt another blow when Ryan Green was brought off injured, and then couldn't find a way back. Steve Guinan's low effort caused no problems for Duke, while substitute Mark Beesley fired just wide from the edge of the area. Ben Smith's late volley also went just over, but United were not to find a way through.

Three points lost

Hereford United lost 2-1 at home against Burton this afternoon. Tony James put the Bulls in the lead with a penalty but Burton hit back with a goal in each half.

Leaders Chester just managed to defeat Farnborough 3-2 and so go further ahead of the Bulls who remain in second position in the league.

Ryan Green went off injuried in the second half and later Jamie Pitman told BBC Hereford and Worcester about his problem.

"He's pulled a muscle in his hip. It will need to be accessed in a few days to see how he is."

Of the game, Pitman added: "They managed to score twice for our own deficiencies. We'll keep battling and will do as best we can to put it right on the training ground.

"We conceded two bad goals but played excellently in the first half. It wasn't a particularly bad performance but we've just got to learn by those mistakes and start a run of wins. We understand that it's frustrating for the fans, but they've seen some very good football this year. We're still second, and Chester could have a rough patch, so we need to keep a consistent run going."

After the game Graham Turner, the Hereford United manager, remarked: "We just didn't defend well and we can't keep conceding goals like we are and hope to win games."
