Caddis praises two players as injury problems plague midfield

Injuries are continuing to plague Hereford but boss Paul Caddis insists that when everyone is fully fit, he's got a good group of players.

Fitness has been an issue for Hereford throughout the current Enterprise National League North campaign, with summer signings like Chris Wreh and Kai Williams early exits.

Midfielder Lawson D'Ath is also currently out injured, an influential player so far this season, and supporters are still eagerly awaiting Gus Mufata's full return as he fights his way back from a lengthy spell out.

Speaking after Tuesday's 1-1 draw against AFC Telford United under the floodlights at Edgar Street, a game Hereford were lucky to earn a point from after a poor first half, Caddis gave his thoughts on Mufata.

Having started his career at Colchester's academy before a move to Bristol City’s U18s, played more than 250 games for National League sides like Gateshead, Hartlepool, Boreham Wood, York City and Solihull Moors.

"He's a player that you can hear some people getting frustrated because he's nice and smooth and calm on the ball when he's not 100 mile an hour," the gaffer said.

"He knows how to take the intensity of a game and how to keep the ball and make it simple and keep it bouncing, keep it moving.

"We missed that in the first half. We didn't have enough just to go and get a couple of passes in the game, going a bit too direct at times.

"Even if we're going direct when they're pressing us, the quality into Rem [Campbell] is just a fight. Gus brings that.

"If we have a fully fit squad, then we've got a good group there. We'll have to keep managing Gus. He's been out for 11/12 weeks since the first game of the season but you can see why we brought him to the club.

"He's got brilliant quality. He's got calmness. He's got physical attributes and hopefully we can get him back fully fit and complete 90 minutes in the next couple of weeks."

Having said his squad is still short in midfield, he said Matt Richards was playing "with an issue" but is "just getting on with it", while they weren't quite sure what the outlook is for Lawson D'Ath.

Having been asked about D'Ath's hip problem, Caddis replied: "We haven't trained him between the two games. We'll get him in on Thursday and we'll assess him properly.

"We just know that he was unavailable tonight. He's likely going to miss the weekend as well. He took a whack on the hip, and it's come out quite hefty bruising."

However, Caddis was pleased with his new recruit Charlie Cooper who joins on loan from Yeovil Town until January.

The 28-year-old's debut offered a bright spot on a night where injuries once again forced Caddis to shuffle his pack.

"I thought he was excellent," the Scot admitted, and said Cooper kept wanting another five minutes despite tiring.

"It shows he's got that desire and that inner strength to go and keep grinding through things. But there comes a point where you can't be stupid and we've got to look after him and had to take him off."
