Match report: Season finale a damp squib - but admire what has happened

The end of Hereford's season might have been a bit of a damp squib as play-off-qualifying Boston comfortably ran out 2-0 winners, but take a moment to realise what has been achieved.

Twelve months ago there were virtually no players, a rookie manager and only a few thousand pounds in the bank.

Now, the relationship between the supporters and players, as well as the club as a whole, is far better, gates are up with an average of 2,600, and Hereford finished the season 11th with 69 points - one more than was needed for the play-offs last year.

For the final game of the season, at a gloriously sunny Edgar Street - now home to Hereford until at least 2070 - both Paul Downing and Tope Obadeyi dropped to the bench to make way for Nathan Cameron and Jason Cowley, with the latter starting up front alongside Andy Williams.

In the opening stages of the game, both sides had chances to take an early lead. For Hereford, a long Alex Babos throw fell at the feet of Cameron who fired wide and Cowley did well to beat Michael Bostwick to the ball but was denied by the keeper's feet.

For Boston United, it was former Bull Kelsey Mooney who came close as he headed wide from a cross before Keaton Ward and Jimmy Knowles both fired wide.

With 17 minutes on the clock, Boston - who needed a win to secure a play-off place otherwise they would have to hope results went their way - could've had the opener as Jai Rowe fired wide after the ball bounced over Yusifu Ceesay.

After a bright 10 minutes, Hereford soon began to struggle to keep hold of the ball, a problem which has plagued the side on and off over recent weeks. That didn't stop Williams coming close, with keeper Cameron Gregory once again pulling off a fine save. Breaking quickly, Cowley played the ball into the path of Williams and after bursting into the box, saw his low drive saved by Gregory.

For Hereford's stopper Curtis Pond, his first save of the game didn't come until the 38th minute as he kept Jimmy Knowles' long-range effort out, with the 22-year-old needing to do better to draw first blood despite the visitors dominating possession and keeping up the pressure.

Lewis Hudson Is Tripped

With just minutes to go until the break, a shot from Willo - who always shows his Football League experience and incredible ability to read a game - somehow stayed out to keep the scores level. Nathan Cameron was able to chip the ball over to Willo on the right who, from a tight angle, beat the keeper with a looped ball but was denied by the upright.

Half time: Hereford 0 - Boston United 0

Into the second half, and with Boston's players no doubt now aware they had dropped out of the play-offs with Spennymoor and South Shields winning, Boston upped the pace and broke the deadlock in minutes. It was Jordan Richards who was able to lash the ball home as Hereford dilly-dallied in clearing from the box.

The Bulls could've responded almost immediately as Babos picked out an unmarked Cowley with a low corner, but he couldn't control the shot as it looped over the crossbar.

Despite the hope, the Pilgrims doubled their lead in the 64th minute as Jai Rowe, denied by Aurio Teixeira moments before, on the right-hand side of the danger area was picked out with a probing ball and making no mistake in stabbing it across into the far corner.

There were two chances for the Lilywhites in quick succession as a deflected Jid Okeke cross was scrabbled over the bar by Gregory in a crowded six-yard box before substitute Obadeyi, on for Lawson D'Ath, fired agonisingly wide from the resulting Babos corner.

Despite a final roll of the dice as Paul Caddis brought Lassana Mendes and Adam Rooney on for Alex Babos and a hobbling Cowley, Hereford were unable to claw their way back into the game with Boston good value for their 2-0 win.

Despite amassing 69 points, over the season Hereford just needed a little more at times to turn themselves into a top-seven side. If the nucleus of the squad can be retained, and some areas strengthened with a slightly increased budget, something tells me next season could be even more interesting.
