Match Report: Scunthorpe v Hereford

On what must have been the warmest afternoon of the year to date Hereford faced a tough challenge at second placed Scunthorpe.

It didn't help that part-time Hereford had played on Wednesday evening at Banbury.

And the windy conditions didn't help either.

The Bulls scored late in the first half to lead at the break but two goals early in the second half from the home side meant that if they were going to get anything from the game they had to score again.

And for 32 minutes they tried to. But on 88 minutes the game was over when Scunthorpe added a third and then a fourth in injury time.

Hereford manager Paul Caddis made two changes from the side that started at Banbury on Wednesday evening.

Starting X1: Curtis Pond, Aaron Skinner, Lewis Hudson, Aurio Teixeira, Yusifu Ceesay, Alex Babos, Andy Williams, Lawson D'Ath, Jid Okeke, Nathan Cameron and Kyle Howkins

In came Yusifu Ceesay and Lawson D-Ath. They replaced Jason Cowley and Dom McHale who dropped to the bench. The other subs were Adam Rooney, Tope Obadeyi and Kieran Phillips.

Tom Pugh, who came on loan to Hereford earlier in the season, started for Scunthorpe.

The first incident of note was when Ceesay appeared to be pushed just inside the box but referee Elliot Bell wasn't interested.

At this stage some thought the black and white balloons straying onto the pitch more entertaining than the football.

Ceesay did well to get into the box but tried to shoot past a defender and the keeper when a pass to Babos might have been a better option.

Minutes later Skinner had to leave the pitch with what looked like a hamstring proble. He was replace by Obadeyi.

The first card of the game came whem Ceesay was brought down by Reagan Ogle close to the touchline.

A free kick taken by Babos found Williams who turned and shot but the keeper gathered safely.

Several corners followed for Hereford one of which found Hudson and was knocked for another corner by Pugh.

Scunthorpe then had a better spell with Dion Sembie-Ferris shooting just wide of Pond's goal.

Then on 40 minutes Hereford took the lead. A corner was awarded after Okeke had shot towards keeper Fitzsimons and the ball went behind. Babos took a short corner and the ball went over several players towards Obadeyi who managed to get his head on it and send it past the keeper.

Half-time: Scunthorpe 0 Hereford 1.

After the break Scunthorpe stepped up a gear and within six minutes they had equalised.

A quickly taken long throw in from Whitehall found the dangerous Roberts and he slammed the ball past Pond.

D'Ath was booked for a challenge on Sembie-Ferris and then moments later Scunthorpe took the lead from the free kick.

Roberts sent the ball towards the top corner but Pond managed to get a hand to it. However the ball stayed in play and Kouogun was near enough to head it into the net.

For the next half hour Hereford defended well and made several good breaks but chances to equalise were at a premium.

During that spell Adam Rooney was red carded. The ball had gone out of play by the dug-outs. What then happened is unclear but it appears Rooney and one of the Scunthorpe management team, not manager Jimmy Dean, tussled to return the ball to play. Both were red-carded.

Dom McHale came on for Ceesay who appeared to be troubled by his recent knee injury. Two minutes later Cowley came on for Babos no doubt in an attempt to try and get back into the game.

Hereford won a free kick which with Babos off the pitch was taken by Cowley. But it flew over the crossbar.

At this stage whilst Hereford's build up play was working the final cross/pass into the box was poor.

On 88 minutes the game was over when Butterfield passed to unmarked substitute McAlinden who turned the ball past Pond and into the bottom of the net.

McHale got into a good position but choose to pass when a shot might have been the better option.

Cowley did have a chance from outside the area but his shot didn't get beyond a group of defenders.

Cameron also tried luck but it went well wide.

Then three minutes into stoppage time Scunthrope scored again, Alfie Beestin with the best goal of the game. He rocketed the ball past Pond from 25 yards.
