Sellebrity Soccer match at Edgar Street postponed

A waterlogged pitch at Edgar Street means Sunday's Sellebrity Soccer match in aid of three charities has been postponed.

With the pitch already saturated, the club said more rain is due before the match so have postponed until July 28.

Supporters were told that if they cannot make the new date, but would like to donate ticket money to George’s Fund, Be More Frank or Cardiac Risk in the Young (the Kieran Joyce Memorial Fund), then they do not need to do anything.

Anyone wanting a refund should email jroberts@herefordfc.co.uk.

"A huge, huge thank you as so many of you had booked tickets," the club said.

"The charities are so grateful for the army of support and hopefully most of you will be able to make the new date."

Several celebrities were set to take to the Edgar Street pitch for the third time to raise money for the charities. They were expected to include former Eastenders actor Jake Wood, Love Island's Zac Ashford and Dan Osbourne from The Only Way is Essex. Club chairman Chris Ammonds, kitman Dan Pace, physio James Hughes and goalkeeping coach Shaun Edwards were also set to play.

Over the past two years, the Sellebrity Soccer event has seen nearly 2,000 fans turn out and help to raise around £8,000 for local charities Herefordshire Mind and the Ely Memorial Fund.

About this year's charities

George's Fund

George’s Fund supports projects aimed at children aged 3 to 11 years old in Herefordshire.

Applications are currently considered on an annual basis, sign up to our e-newsletter for notifications.

George’s Fund was set up by Laura Hughes to remember her five-year-old son George.

Laura and her family had their lives turned upside down on 27 August 2020 when their son suddenly became sick. The next day he was diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), a highly malignant brain tumour (cancer) which affects children almost exclusively between the ages of 4 and 1. In the consultant’s words, they had been “hit by lightning”.

They returned home to spend as much time as a family with George and his two brothers, Oscar (then 6) and Harry (then 2). Six weeks later George passed away in the arms of his family.

George’s Fund remembers his short and special life. As Laura said: ”As a mum, one of your jobs is to tell your children that ‘everything is going to be ok’. I couldn’t do that for George, so if we as a family can make a small difference to another child’s life then it will give us huge comfort.

Be More Frank

Be More Frank was set up in honour of Frank who sadly passed away at the age of 13 to a rare bone cancer.

Funds raised in Frank’s name provide financial assistance to families with a child diagnosed with cancer in Herefordshire, Powys, Monmouthshire, Worcestershire and Gloucestershire.

Be More Frank is a special named fund of the Grace Kelly Childhood Cancer Trust.

Cardiac Risk in the Young (The Kieran Joyce Memorial Fund)

This fund was set up by the Joyce family to support CRY reduce the frequency of young sudden cardiac death.

In September 2019 Kieran, who was only 15, fell asleep and never woke up. He was a fit and healthy youngster. The fund was set up by Kieran’s family, not only to inform and create awareness, but also to raise money in Kieran’s memory.

CRY facilitate the vital screening needed to help avert cases of young sudden cardiac death. For every £6,000 raised, this allows for a team to come along to Hereford for a day and screen 100 young adults between the ages of 14 to 35.
