Hereford Historian Ron Parrott has delved deep into his records to answer questions after Saturday's game against Scunthorpe.
“As you can guess, a lot of folks have quizzed me over the weekend
on two counts. Firstly, when was the last time we were 4-0 down at home
at half-time and when was the last time we lost 5-1 at home? As an old
‘un, the latter was still relatively fresh in my mind and the last time
that this occurred was back in the old Third Division (now the First
Division of course). It was on a Tuesday afternoon during the power
strikes back in 1974/75 and Plymouth Argyle thrashed us 5-1.
The
first query had me scratching my head! There have been many of examples
over the years when we’ve been 4-0 down at half-time away from home,
the most recent being at Crewe in 1993/94 and at Arsenal in the FA Cup
in 1984/85. But at home, well, in approximately 2,500 home matches
played since the club was formed in 1924, we have only ever once been
4-0 down at half-time but that was in the FA Cup at home to Moor Green
back in 1945/46 in extenuating circumstances. However, I am proud to say
that despite playing in 12 different leagues over the 100 years, we
have never once been 4-0 down at home at half-time. So what do we do?
There’s no point dwelling on it, we quickly put it behind us, dust
ourselves off and concentrate on the next game!”
