News round up: Scunthorpe's thanks over ground, Alfreton's FA Cup hopes and more

Alfreton Town boss Billy Heath
A week on from the deal which saw Scunthorpe United secure Glanford Park, owner Michelle Harness has written a heartfelt thanks to all involved in getting to that stage. The ground and surrounding land have been bought by a not-for-profit company, with some private backing from supporters with the majority being Government cash through the Town Deal Fund.

In the thanks, Harness said there had been a mountain to climb, but with the backing of the club's supporters, they have overcome many stumbling blocks and challenges.

Alfreton Town manager Billy Heath has told BBC Radio Derby his side of part-timers "deserve all the credit" after earning a second-round FA Cup replay at Walsall.

The Reds battled the League Two side to a goalless draw in front of a packed crowd of 3,000 people on Tuesday and Heath said his side is capable of winning what will be a difficult replay.

He said: "We won't be going there with a whimper, we still think we can win the tie. It will be even more difficult, we know that. We will be going there, again we believe we have a chance."

In other FA Cup news affecting another National League North side, Forest Green Rovers have been ordered to replay their first-round tie against Scarborough Athletic after admitting to fielding an ineligible player.

BBC Sport reported League Two side Rovers beat National League North team Scarborough 5-2 in a first-round replay on 14 November.

The Football Association said a professional game board sub-committee had ruled the tie should be replayed to a finish next Tuesday, 12 December.

Blackpool will host the winners in the second round with the winners of that tie away to Nottingham Forest in round three.

Darlington fans have questioned Josh Gowling's latest signing. The 20-year-old midfielder Sonil Vasileiou, who was without a club, has joined the National League North strugglers after training with them for several weeks.

But with the club still firmly in the relegation zone, some fans have taken to X, formerly Twitter, to question why Gowling isn't firming up defence instead of signing another midfielder.

The club said Vasileiou, who is Greek, has played for Brightlingsea United, Sporting Clube Ideal in Portugal and Dereham Town, and can play as a forward or wide man.

They have also announced brand agency The Unknown Creative as the club's new away shirt sponsor after former partner Nuleaf went bust.
