Chairman Stig reveals why Edgar Street return is extra special for Willo

Andy Williams, centre, was nervous to make his debut on Saturday
Andy Williams was nervous to make his National League North debut with Hereford on Saturday, but his young children are making the return even more special.

Williams came on as a substitute on Saturday and a looped ball to Jason Cowley saw the marksman control the ball, turn onto his right foot and score injury time winner against Spennymoor.

Then on Boxing Day at Gloucester, Willo scored a brace after coming off the bench, as well as hitting the woodwork.

But club chairman Chris Ammonds said the 37-year-old striker, who was at League Two Walsall when Caddis signed him in the summer, was nervous to make his National League North debut on Saturday.

In front of 2,707 at Edgar Street, Willo came on to rapturous applause in the 73rd minute, marking his return to competitive football in a Hereford shirt for the first time in 14 years.

It had been 159 days since he picked up a knee injury pre-season, with the former Swindon Town forward - where he played with Paul Caddis - having to have an operation.

During an interview with BBC Hereford and Worcester, chair Chris Ammonds revealed how now Williams has young children, an Edgar Street return is extra special for the forward.

Even though he's made more than 400 appearances for Football League clubs since last being at Edgar Street, on loan from Bristol Rovers in 2009, Ammonds said Williams now has a chance to show his children "what it's all about".

Ammonds, also known as Stig, said: "There will be no doubt about the impact he could have if he is able to stay fit and take us forward, it'll be absolutely brilliant.

"He was so nervous on Saturday, once he knew he was involved. I've spoken to him a few times and he's got young children who don't necessarily appreciate the fact he's been a footballer and had such a great career.

"This is kind of his opportunity to show them what it's all about.

"Hopefully, fingers crossed, we'll see a lot of him."

Williams, who is originally from Hereford, started his career with United and scored 28 goals in 72 appearances between 2004 and 2007. A £100,000 bid was initially refused by the Bulls before £150,000 was accepted - only for Williams to turn down the move.

But after the Gasheads were promoted to League One, he left Edgar Street - only to return on loan twice.

Paul Caddis has also said there's a lot more to come from Willo and interviewer Terry Goodwin suggested that the club had hung a lot on the signing in the summer.

Ammonds said: "He's like a new signing now and a new signing that we couldn't possibly ever afford at this time of year in normal circumstances.

"Andy's suffered more than anybody given what's happened to him. He was so excited to return, we stuck our necks out - it's probably fair to say we really went, stuck our neck out to try and get him in.

"A lot of it was down to the fact he had a relationship with the manager.

"To see him get that injury in that second pre-season friendly was a devastating blow for everybody.

"But even in that 20-minute cameo on Saturday he just gave glimpses of what we hoped and what we knew he could bring to us."
