Nuneaton Borough locked out of ground and left in 'critical suitation' again

Nuneaton Borough have been locked out of their Liberty Way Ground
Step three Midlands side Nuneaton Borough have been locked out of their ground and forced to play their midweek game six miles away in Hinkley.

It's over unpaid rent, with the club behind with payments since 2019 - when an appeal was launched to save them as they owed thousands to the HMRC.

In a statement, the club, who were relegated from the National League North in 2019 when Hereford finished 17th, also cited the Covid pandemic as an issue when seasons were cut short and games played behind closed doors.

In a statement, they said staff turned up to work on Tuesday morning (24th October) to be met with a notice of re-entry. This has left the club in a 'critical situation'.

Landlord Arden Tigress had taken back possession of the Liberty Way Ground with no prior warning, meaning that evening the club had to hastily arrange a groundshare at Hinkley Leicester Road.

The club said they were told it was because of an admin issue as they had not received an email from the club advising of future payment schedules - and the club claim they are working their way out of the debt.

"We have since made great progress in catching up with rent arrears and had good dialogue with an Arden Tigress representative and we were currently on course to be level on all payments by December this year," the statement said.

"Further to this, on Tuesday as soon as this situation arose, our chairman offered to personally pay all outstanding rent to rectify the situation.

"He also managed to hastily arrange a host venue at Hinckley Leicester Road to facilitate the playing of our league game that evening, in which our staff and volunteers managed the evening superbly and ended with a great 2-0 win.

"Massive credit must go to the management team, players and fans who put aside all these issues and represented the club in fantastic fashion, thank you.

"The current situation is quite fluid and everyone is working tirelessly behind the scenes to try and find a solution that keeps Nuneaton Borough at the FCS Stadium, however without our home we are in a critical situation.

"The lost income from matches and events will damage the club ability to continue."

Borough don't know where they will be able to play their Southern League Premier Division Central in future and have apologised to all fans.

As reported by CoventryLive, the letter, from Shergroup enforcement, on the entrance to the stadium said: "The landlord of these premises hereby gives you notice that he has re-entered this property on 24 October 2023 at 06.00am under the terms of your lease and has taken back possession of them."

The ground is owned by a third party group, steered by Neil Robinson, a former long-standing Nuneaton Rugby Club sponsor, ex Nuns committee member and former player. It was bought from Coventry-born businessman Norman Smurthwaite back in October 2019.

Smurthwaite had bought the ground in 2018 to help 'safeguard' the future of the football club's use of the ground.
