Downing Joins Bulls

Paul Downing has joined Hereford. The 6ft 1in center-back comes in following a 4-0 defeat at Tamworth last Monday.

He is probably best known for spending four seasons at Walsall from 2012 to 2016.

Downing will already know about Edgar Street as he spent a short spell on loan with Hereford United in early 2010 making six appearances.

"We are delighted to get someone of Paul’s experience in at a time we feel it is needed.," said Hereford manager Paul Caddis.

"He will be well known to our supporters having featured for Hereford United on loan in 2010.

"Paul has been training with League 2 and National League clubs during the past few months and feels the time is now right to find a place to play his football.

"I’m really looking forward to working with Paul and he will bring a great deal of experience to us, both on and off the pitch."

Now 31 Downing started his career with the West Bromwich academy where at the time his uncle Keith Downing was in charge.

He made his first start for the Bulls on February 2nd 2010 alongside Darren Jones.

A few weeks later he was shown a red card 'for denying a goal-scoring opportunity' in a game at Notts County which was lost 5-0. The Bulls were already down to ten men as keeper Adamson had already been sent off.

'The ten men became nine on 87 minutes when Downing was harshly adjudged to have handled on the goal line. A deflected shot reared off the surface and appeared to strike the young defender on the shoulder but the referee insisted it was deliberate handball and promptly issued a second red card along with awarding a penalty.'

Hereford appealed but to no effect.
