Mkandawire praises Turner for giving him a chance

Former Hereford United defender Tamika Mkandawire has been speaking to the Shropshire Star about Graham Turner.

Having had two loan spells with Hereford United in the 2003/04 season from West Bromwich, he signed permanently for the Bulls for the 2004–05 season.

He hardly missed any games during the next two seasons, with Hereford securing promotion back to the Football League with the 3-2 win over Halifax in May 2006.

After spells with the armband, he was then made club captain for the 2006/07 season, before moving to Leyton Orient.

Fast forward to 2013, he linked up again with Graham Turner - the long-time Hereford United manager and owner - and John Trewick, but this time at Shrewsbury.

Mkandawire then left after Salop were relegated back to League Two at the end of the season, but said it was tough to see Turner go when he resigned midway through the campaign.

He said it was a challenging time for himself and the club.

"He was always good to me, Graham Turner. He kind of gave me my start in football really, in terms of first-team football," Mkandawire, now 40, told the Shrews Views podcast.

"So from that perspective, it was tough to see him go because he'd always been good to me and, like I said, gave me my chance.

"It's tough. Ultimately, it really didn't really change much."

He added: "I was sad to see Graham Turner go. He's done well for himself, he's got a good name in football, a great name with what he did with Wolves."

After Shrewsbury, Mkandawire moved to North American Soccer League's Tampa Bay Rowdies and retired four years later.
