Newly promoted South Shields were expected to be National League North promotion contenders having been very well funded in recent seasons. Yet it seems that they may be unable to match the funding of Brackley and Fylde. South Shields have seen crowds surge to around 2,000 as they win most weeks. The club announcement that Kevin Phillips has left by mutual agreement hints that money may be a factor “as the club continues on its path to a more sustainable model.”
It may be that a change in budget was a factor in Phillips departure as having won promotion and seen FA Cup success he has an excellent record. The new manager is another former Sunderland star Julio Arca.
