Ninety Minute Interview with Paul Caddis

Three years ago Paul Caddis was interviewed by former teammate Si Ferry. He talks about how Tommy Burns moved him back from right wing to right back at Celtic to toughen him up. Paul was terrified of Gordon Strachan but learned loads from him. Playing Barcelona in the Champions League, Messi scored twice, Henry once but Paul kept Ronaldinho quiet and Strachan said he played well.

Paul enjoyed Strachan’s tough management but had to seek a move away even though he was a Celtic fan as he did not start enough games. Paul explains how he dealt with the media spreading false stories which ended up with Celtic banning the Sun.

You can get an idea of what may be Paul’s management style. He praises Craig Levein at Dundee United because he treated players exactly the same whether they had played 500 games or 25 minutes for the club. He loved the high intensity training.

He moved to Swindon for less money but to get regular football, having secured a good contract at Celtic. Managed by Paulo di Canio who he found brilliant tactically but difficult in many other ways, yet he made Paul captain. Paul’s chirpy attempts to keep players laughing did not go down well with Paulo and he was delighted to go on loan from League Two to the Championship with the brilliant Lee Clark managing Birmingham City.

He found it daunting with big personalities and big players on big salaries. Nikola Zigic was on £65,000 a week. Caddis did well winning man of the match awards, and respecting Lee Clark. When negotiations went on for Caddis to move permanently to Birmingham Paul declined a hotel and opted to stay in a caravan park so he could cook, which he enjoys.

After more shenanigans with Swindon he opted against a move to Blackpool and at the last minute a deal was agreed to move to Birmingham. Interviewer Si Ferry jokes “you were then loaded!” Caddis became a hero for scoring the goal at Bolton which kept Blues up. He loved being at Birmingham and described it as the best time in his career. Caddis did not participate that much in the celebrations for staying up as he doesn’t drink, he does like a Chinese takeaway.

Caddis gets called up for Scotland managed by Gordon Strachan. He describes his international appearance as the proudest four minutes of his life. Gianfranco Zola became manager who Paul describes as too nice. The ethos of Paul which comes through is that Paul wants to treat everyone the same and he respects and expects hard work. Paul moves to Bury which was a bad experience akin to the Keyte years at Hereford United.

He then plays with great players at Blackburn and goes to Bradford as captain. He says he was insulted with the initial offer of £300 a week and had to get manager David Hopkin to sort a proper wage. Gary Bowyer comes in and appoints another captain but Bradford are relegated and Caddis is released.
