James Melhado |
In his post match interview after the visit of Darlington yesterday to Edgar Street, Hereford manager Josh Gowling said he didn't think his side deserved to lose the game.
"It came down to two moments in the game," said Gowling.
"You give the ball away first half in a bad area and they score just before half-time.
"And then I watched the goal back, Jordan stops, they slide the ball across for the second. If he had carried out he would have cleared it."
Otherwise Gowling was full of praise for his players.
"The lads were outstanding. James (Melhado) was up and down all game. It was Kane's (Thompson-Sommers) best game in a Hereford shirt.
"We pressed well - that's how we want to play. But we've not been able to do that because of the personnel we've so we've had to be a bit more reserved, sitting in, being a bit boring at times but I want to be on the front foot which we certainly were today."
Jack Holmes was man of the match.
"He played Wednesday in the County Cup and I think that gave him a lot of confidence. I thought he was outstanding and pressed well, he worked hard and that's what you want."
Darlington are second in the league.
"You would not think that after today's performance."
After going into the lead Darlington slowed down the pace of the game.
"It was just time-wasting wasn't it.
"They went to five at the back and shut-shop, even within that we still had opportunities.
"Aaron had one, had he gone with his left he would probably have scored, and we had a couple of others opportunities. We just didn't get it in the back of the net.
"It wasn't our day today but I just think for us looking at the last four games we've played we've not played well but when you start playing like we did today we're going to win games of football, that's for sure.
"We've brought in a full back, we had Jack Evans back, we've played the last two games with no full backs, we dropped Luke down, put Aaron up top, Kane's back.
"It's just bodies and because we've got a few bodies back it gives us more energy, means we can be a bit more on the front foot and play how we want to play.
"I know the fans have been disappointed but we've had to be like that.
"We've got back to basics today and I think the fans enjoyed it."
