Hereford Stats 2021/22

Club Historian Ron Parrott has completed his compilation of stats for the 2021/22 season and talks us through some of the highs and lows, as well as tables of Hereford’s goalscorers and appearances.
It was very much a season of unfulfilled promise, with the team at times playing sweet passing football and looking like world beaters, whilst at other times, we looked completely clueless and it was impossible to see where the next goal would come from. One only has to look at the final league table to see where the problem lay. We only scored 28 goals in 21 home games and in the same amount of aways, we only managed to find the back of the net 23 times.
 
In league matches, Tom Owen-Evans was our top scorer with 13 and to demonstrate the problem, our next highest scorer was Miles Storey with seven. Easier said than done I appreciate, but the conclusion has to be that not only do we need at least one decent striker, capable of scoring 20+ per season but perhaps more importantly, we need wide players who can chip in with 10+ each per season and likewise, we need an attacking midfielder, who can also find the back of the net. Next season looks as if it could be very much reliant on the “Boost the Budget” appeal.
However, the most worrying aspect is the drop in gates, which at the end of the day, are the life-blood of the club. Back in 2017/18 we averaged a healthy 2,562 but the following season we dropped a couple of hundred to 2,367. In 2019/20, we dropped very nearly another 300 to 2,049. There were no stats for last season’s Covid hit campaign but last season, we dropped yet another 250 to an average of 1,801. This annual drop is obviously unsustainable and has to be addressed urgently.
There were many other interesting stats during the season too:-
1.    We completed three double wins but conceded four.
2.    We only once came from behind to win but likewise, we only lost once after being in front.
3.    We had three players sent off: Krystian Pearce (twice) and Ryan McLean.
4.    There were no “ever presents” during the league campaign. Tom Owen-Evans was the nearest with 40 out of 42.
5.    No hat-tricks were recorded during the campaign.
6.    We used a total of 51 players in 51 matches in all competitions and hardly ever fielded a settled side.
