Albert Derrick - A Potted History

Hereford historian Ron Parrott has compiled the following potted history of the career of Albert Derrick.

Appearances: 290 (290+0 sub.) Goals: 129

Seasons played: 1963/64 to 1968/69

Born Newport 6th August 1939, Died Newport 27/06/2022

After leaving the Army, Albert played a handful of games for Newport County in 1960/61, scoring once in three matches before moving into non-league football. He signed for United from Cambridge City towards the end of this season, but his goals failed to prevent relegation. A prolific scorer he went on to net 129 goals for Hereford in 291 appearances and he became a firm favourite with the club’s supporters. Eventually, Albert tired of travelling three times a week from Newport to Hereford for training so decided to return to the Football League, again with Newport County, at the age of 30.

Although he proved that he could still find the net, with eight goals in 26 appearances, Albert later confessed that it was the worst decision he had ever made. He tore a cartilage in that first season back, which effectively ended his career, although in 1970/71 he scored twice in 23 appearances with Worcester City before ending his career with Barry Town and Merthyr Tydfil.. A brush with cancer later in life resulted in Albert losing part of his larynx. His father, also called Albert played for Newport County and Swindon Town.
