Vote Gives Us Cause For Concern Said National League General Manager

Mark Ives, the recently appointed General Manager of the National League, has spoken about today's failed vote of no confidence in the chairman and board at the EGM.

"I don't want to open up things that have gone on in the past, I get it," said Ives in a BBC Three Counties Radio interview.

"I understand the frustrations of many of the clubs.

"It would be easy to say the vote of no confidence today and say the result of that was overwhelming. But it would be wrong of me to say that because the fact that there was even a vote gives us cause for concern. So we've got to take that on board.

"It's interesting that some are saying the main concern is about the voting, others that have different views around what is the major concern. It could be representation on the board for others. It could be independence and other governance issues. There are a mixture of views."

How do you repair this broken relationship?

"By working together.

"We are in the process of recruiting and appointing a new chairman. Once that new chairman is in place we've got to take the points forward that are of concern.

"I understand the frustration about voting and representation. That's not unique by the way. There are other footballing bodies who have a higher threshold of voting compared for their top divisions to others but, for sure, it does need to be looked at."

Looking back at the season Ives admitted no one could have pre-empted what has happened.

"Covid has taken us by surprise and put us in a position that has been really difficult. But that said we are there and have to pick up the pieces from that.

"But we can only do that, in my view, by working together."

Given the vote that might be harder than you think?

"I'm not sure I agree.

"For sure, part of the argument in the past is that we haven't listened to the clubs or worked with the clubs. That has to be understood and taken forward.

"I think it's important we do exactly that."
