After the end of the second world war football restarted and one of the Hereford United players at the time was Charlie Thompson.
Between 1945 and 1955 he scored 180 goals and became known as 'Mr Hereford United'.
Probably his best known season was 1947/48.
He scored three first half hat-tricks that season against Gravesend, Cheltenham and Thynnes Athletic in the FA Cup.
He also scored a hat-trick in four minutes against Thynnes and altogether eight goals in Hereford 's 11-0 victory. It was, and still is, the most number of goals scored by a Hereford player in a competitive game.
Worse for Thynnes was that their goalkeeper Wood broke his wrist saving one of Thompson's shots.
In the 1949/50 season Thompson was awarded a champions medal when Hereford reserves won the Birmingham League. And later that season Thompson's was awarded a benefit match against a League XI which attracted a crowd of 8000 to Edgar Street.
Thompson died in 1997 and his medal was lost.
However YourHerefordshire's Matt Healey has helped return the medal to Thompson's family after it was found during a house clearance.
"I collect Hereford United memorabilia and Andrew Wood from Herefordshire Community recycling got in touch and told me that during a house clearance he had some books and programme’s of the football club and asked if I was interested in having them. I said I would and met him a few weeks ago. Included in the find was a medal named C Thompson.”
Matt tracked down the family.
"I put out a post on the Hereford United Facebook group and Charlie’s daughter in law Margaret got in contact, we were able to arrange a day to meet up and I was able to reunite the medal to Charlie’s son Roger."
Roger didn't know the medal existed.
"It’s fantastic it’s been reunited with the family after all these years away, we will make sure its looked after."
