Goalless draw for Bulls in opening league game

Southport 0 Hereford 0

Hereford opened their National League North campaign with a battling 0-0 draw at Southport.

The home side struck the crossbar on two occasions, while Kyle Finn went close for the Bulls on a couple of occasions.

Lenell John-Lewis, who scored twice on Saturday in the FA Cup win over Gosport, did not travel with the squad after picking up an injury. So with Demetri Brown also still out, Hereford had no recognised strikers in their squad. There was also a surprise place on the bench for goalkeeper Brandon Hall, while former Hereford United stopper Dan Hanford started for Southport.

Hereford almost got off to a great save but Kyle Finn's effort from distance was tipped over the bar by Hanford.

Finn again had an effort on goal in the 17th minute while shortly afterwards, Tom Owen-Evans had a shot saved.

Then at the other end, Hereford goalkeeper Paul White was left in no-man's land as Jack Sampson's looping header sailed over him and on to the crossbar.

The rest of the first half was a scrappy affair with neither side forcing too many chances.

Half time: Southport 0 Hereford 0.

The second half had the same pattern to it with chances few and far between. Chris Camwell tried his luck from distance for Hereford before Finn shot just wide in the 68th minute. However, it was Southport who almost opened the scoring in spectacular fashion five minutes later when Marcus Carver's fierce effort struck the crossbar.

Camwell then had a shot at goal that hit the side netting while Niall Watson's cross failed to find a teammate for Southport.

Luke Haines had a late effort at goal for the Bulls, but both sides had to settle for a point in the end.

Hereford: White, Camwell, Grimes, Wright, Hodgkiss (D Jones), Haines, Lloyd, Klukowski (Nabi 38), A Jones, Finn, Owen-Evans (McQuilkin 81). Subs not used: Hall, Digie.
