Bulls fans jailed following disorder at Stockport match

Two Hereford supporters have been jailed following violent scenes that happened before and after the Bulls' match against Stockport last year.

Andrew Beavan and Clive Symonds received 10 months and 18 months respectively for their part in the ugly scenes that took place on April 6, 2019.

Beavan, aged 53, of Lilac Grove, Hereford, had pleaded guilty to one count of violent disorder at an earlier hearing, while Symonds, 31, of Bovingdon Park, Hereford, pleaded guilty to two counts of violent disorder.

Reporting on the court case, the Hereford Times said Beavan had had been accused of 'leading the charge' shortly after 11.30am of the morning of the match, but defence barrister Mark Thompson said footage showed he wasn't at the front of the group which was seen charging rival fans. Judge James Burbidge QC, the Recorder at Worcester Crown Court, agreed that he had not been leading the group, but still condemned his actions. In a police interview, Beavan, who has also been handed a football banning order for six years, admitting to punching a rival fan.

Meanwhile, Symonds was described in a character statement as 'a hard-working family man' and the court heard that he had suffered tragedy some years ago and it was the anniversary of that. However, he accepted that was no way to justify or condone the thuggish behaviour that was shown in court. The Hereford Times said that Symonds was shown on CCTV footage throwing items from the beer garden Yates' into the one in Hogarths and was also involved in ugly scenes in the Merton Meadow car park as Stockport fans tried to leave the ground. As well as being sentenced to 18 months in prison, Symonds was also handed a six-year banning order.
