Long - who won claimed successive promotions with Alvechurch before taking them to the Northern Premier League play offs - picked up 32% of the 668 votes cast.
It was a close run thing as Merthyr Town manager Gavin Williams (who played for Hereford from 1996 to 2002) claimed 29% of the vote and ex-Macclesfield and Kidderminster boss Mark Yates, 25%.
The remaining 14% went for Brackley Town manager Kevin Wilkin.
You are only allowed four options in a Twitter poll, and many other names have been muted by supporters. Some have gone for Hereford United legend Steve Guinan, who is currently working with the English FA, while others believe that Pete Beadle should come back just a year after being given the boot himself.
What is undeniable is that a lot of supporters are clamouring for either someone who is experienced in National League North and above, or is a natural in man-management.
