He made 71 appearances for the Gasheads before being released in May 2009.
On June 5th he returned to Edgar Street on a one year deal.
A couple of weeks later he spoke to the Hereford Times and said he couldn't wait to get started. "At Hereford I had been a wing-back but, for the past three years I have been playing full-back (with Bristol Rovers). I will be looking to get forward more when I am playing for Hereford," said Green.
"I can’t wait to get started."
His first appearance back in a Hereford shirt was in a friendly at Pegasus. He took part in all the other pre-season friendlies and was in the starting eleven for the club's first game of the season at Morecambe, a 2-2 draw. The following Tuesday a 1-0 win for Hereford over Charlton in the Carling Cup. Green marked Wade Small.
"Wade Small is a good player," Green told BN.
"He's been around a bit and played at a decent level. My job is to deal with the winger and I thought I dealt with him well.
"The dressing room is happy tonight and I'd like a big Club in the next round. They're in tomorrow’s draw and I'd love to get one of them."
BN "At home?"
RG "No, away... I enjoy playing at big grounds."
He got his wish, a trip to Portsmouth. But the Bulls were well beaten on the night.
Green had been a regular in the team but manager John Trewick dropped him for the Paint Trophy tie against his former club Bristol Rovers on September 1st. But he was back, and mentioned in dispatches, the following Saturday at Aldershot.
'His through ball towards Harding required a timely tackle from Ryan Green which although fair, saw the Aldershot player leave the field to be replaced by Grant.'
Green missed the following game at Grimsby because of illness. But he was back for the club's first win for ages, over Accrington Stanley. What's more Green was voted man of the match.
However against Rochdale, Green was red carded after being given a second yellow.
"He got too tight with the player, the ball was 25 yards away from him and he was right up against him," said manager John Trewick.
"O'Grady turned him, he's good at that, rolled him round and Ryan got himself into a very bad position. I've got no complaints, it was a yellow card and he's off the pitch."
Green missed the next game, a 2-1 win over Bournemouth on September 30th. But otherwise he continued as the regular right-back.
On October 10th a draw at Rotherham.
"I don't think a lot of teams will got to Rotherham and get a point, I think they will be up there at the end of the season," Green told BBC Hereford and Worcester.
The 'Beast' Mathieu Manset had recently joined Hereford.
"He is such a big lad. He is strong and quick and we have good prospect on our hands there."
A 1-0 win against Chesterfield helped by Green who had recently been appointed 'club captain.
'In the last meaningful action, a terrific move from the away side was dealt with by a last-ditch Ryan Green tackle, thus preserving The Bulls 3 point haul.'
A dead-leg late in the game at Barnet kept Green out of a trip to Burton. But he was back for a 2-1 win over Shrewsbury on November 24th. Two weeks later another injury, this time his thigh, for Green as he was subbed at half-time in the game against Notts County. The Bulls were on a good run in the Paint Trophy and had reached the quarter final.
"This is a game we know can win although we obviously also know that MK Dons will be favourites," said Green.
"We've got home advantage and that could be crucial. MK's form was poor before Saturday whereas we've been doing pretty well at home, so we'll go into the game with confidence and hopefully I'll be fit and back in the team.
"I've been playing with a dead-leg that turned into a strain and that's what ruled me out on Saturday. But if I'm passed fit and selected I'll be itching to play - especially with Wembley only two ties away."
But he wasn't deemed fit and the Bulls lost 4-1. And then he was hit on the head. in a Hereford pub.
"The dead leg which I first had at Barnet has cleared up and I only suffered a small cut after I was hit on the side of the head with a bottle," Green told the Hereford Times.
"I was out with a few of the other players in the pub when the incident happened but I didn't let it spoil my night."
Green was in the team that lost at Torquay on Boxing Day.
Early in the new year Green saw a specialist in Manchester about a possible hernia problem. He missed eight weeks and his first game back was a 2-0 loss to Northampton on February 23rd.
Then under pressure manager John Trewick dropped him for the following game a 5-0 defeat at Notts County. But he was back for the home game against Cheltenham.
'Then Ryan Green showed what has been sorely missed of late with a trademark overlapping thrust down the right flank ending in a Sonko cross that was a fraction long. For Cheltenham, Pook and Hutton both sent efforts high over the bar but Green was not to be denied and soon engineered and scored the only goal of the match. Picking the ball up near the halfway line, Green roared into the opponents half before playing a classic pass and move with Kenny Lunt before hammering the ball passed Brown in the home goal to notch his first strike since his promotion winning effort at Leicester.'
On March 8th Trewick was sacked, two days after a 2-0 defeat by Macclesfield at Edgar Street. Graham Turner was back in charge. And on March 20th, a 2-0 home win against Bradford City.
'Luke Oliver had a clear opening, but Green’s outstanding block saved the day.'
A thigh strain meant Green missing a game at Accrington which the Bulls won 2-1. But he was back for the 2-1 win promoted Rochdale.
'Ryan Green embarked on a marauding run, which finished in the penalty area, and their seemed some merit in his claim that the foul given against him was in fact a fair shoulder charge. The defender then pulled down Dagnall just outside his own box, and the free kick took a slight deflection before being beaten out by Bartlett.'
The last away game of the season was at Dagenham.
'Lunt and McCallum combined down the right before finding Ryan Green on a marauding run and his cross found Marc Pugh at the far post to stab over the line.'
And the final home game, Graham Turner's last in charge, a 3-0 win over Rotherham.
'Ryan Green evoked happy memories of Leicester, but this time his curling shot cleared the bar.'
On May 14th it was announced that the club had offered Green a new deal. But, according to the Hereford Times two weeks later, a reduced one.
On June 4th, David Keyte and Tim Russon became the major shareholders in Hereford United.
In an interview with BN, Keyte said he would talk to Green when the player returned from holiday in Italy.
Four days later Green had signed a new contract.
