Tomorrow Hereford play Telford at Edgar Street. The teams have met a number of times over the years and for this lookback BN features a game from January 1st 2003.
Another win for
rampant Hereford
Hereford
United 2 - 0 Telford United
Another three points saw Hereford United
extend their unbeaten run to six games today, as they
overcame Telford United by two goals to nil.
3077, including 107 from Shropshire, packed into Edgar Street to see a game which was relatively even as Hereford welcomed back Jamie Pitman after a knee injury and Michael Rose after a ban. There was no place for Ian Wright in the squad as he had flu, and Matt Clarke limped off just before the half hour mark.
Telford opened as the brighter team as Andy Tretton was forced to make a last-ditch clearance off the line in the fourth minute. Peter Smith found his way through the Hereford defence, passing Tony James and rounding goalkeeper Matt Baker. However, Tretton was on hand to ensure the score remained level.
Then Baker was called into action again, as Paul Moore's drive and Gary Fitzpatrick's follow-up were both blocked by the agile 'keeper.
Twenty minutes came, and so did the first goal. Paul Parry made a surging run down the left wing, cutting inside and chipping the ball over Telford's on-loan stopper Paul Pettinger. John Grant was well placed to nod the ball home from close range.
At the end of the half, Steve Guinan could have made it two when he tackled Telford's Kevin Davies midway inside the Bucks' half. However, Guinan was dispossessed on the edge of the box before recovering, but his shot went wide as the momentum had been lost.
After the break, Telford started the brighter but Ben Smith doubled Hereford's advantage on 63 minutes. Danny Williams and John Grant had linked well, releasing Smith who was free to hit home a low shot from inside the box.
Telford fought back and almost got back into it when Mark Foran's header from a corner was cleared off the far post by Williams, but United and Baker held on to ensure another three points.
Card-happy referee Mr. S. Dorr of Worcester cautioned nine players on the day in a match which wasn't a dirty affair. Despite this, United jump to fifth in the Conference, and into the play-off places.
