Club historian Ron Parrott told BN that the number is not exceptional.
"For example, there were 44 players in 2010/11, 46 in 2011/12 and 47 in 2008/09 but generally speaking, the worse a season we have, the more players we use," he said.
"However when Graham Turner was in charge, the number was nearly always in the twenties and John Newman never used more than 20 in a season.
"I guess one of the reasons is because the loan system is so easy to use nowadays.
"As a matter of interest, the most we have ever used in a season is 80. This was back in 1945/46 when RAF Credenhill was used as a “demob” centre and many famous Football League players “guested” for United during their few weeks in the city before returning home."
