Hereford FC Club Historian Ron Parrott has received quite a few questions over
the last week about previous encounters with Banbury so to put the
record straight, here is the definitive story:-
The clubs first met back in the early 1950s when our Reserves
played their first team in the old Birmingham League when they were
known as Banbury Spencer and rejoiced in the nickname of “The Gay
Puritans” (insert pictures of the two programmes, one from 1954-55 and the second from 1958-59).
We first met them at first-team level in
1952/53 when we beat them 2-1 at Edgar Street in the Worcestershire
Senior Cup but we then had to wait until 1967/68 until we met again when
we beat them 1-0 at home in the Southern League Cup, drawing the away
leg 0-0. Our paths crossed again in the FA Trophy in 1970/71, when we
drew 2-2 at Banbury and won the replay 1-0 at Edgar Street.
Coincidentally, we played them again in the FA Trophy the following
season and beat them 3-1 at Edgar Street.
We have never met in a League match, although we did play them both
at home and away in the Southern League Premier in 2014/15 but due to
the demise of Hereford United, all records were expunged. But for the
record, we beat them 1-0 at home and 5-1 away, scores that I’d gladly
settle for again this season!”
