Sad news has reached Club Historian Ron Parrott of the passing away of another former player and local lad who played for his home town club between 1956/57 and 1962/63.
Ron recalls, “Eric Tomkins was a stocky, strong-tackling
full-back, who was equally at home in either the left-back or right-back
position. A whole-hearted player, he always gave 100% and was very
popular with supporters”
Born Hereford March 1938, died Malvern June 2017
Local
lad Eric spent several seasons with Hereford Lads Club and represented
England in a boys club international whilst with the Widemarsh Common
outfit. A strong-tackling full-back, he signed for United in the summer
of 1956 and went on to make 158 first-team appearances during his seven
seasons at Edgar Street. Eric was a civil servant, who worked in Malvern
and upon leaving Hereford, he turned out regularly for Malvern Town
before finally hanging up his boots.
Eric will be sadly missed by all.
