Hereford 2 – Wimborne Town 2

Rob Purdie Captained Hereford
Wimborne Town were the visitors to a chilly Edgar Street this afternoon, with three changes made to the starting XI that beat Slimbridge 3-0 last weekend. Ollie Barnes started alongside Mark Preece in the heart of defence, with Joel Edwards and Jamie Molyneux also handed starts in place of Jimmy Oates and Tristan Plummer.

The Whites got the game off to a good start, scoring the opening goal after 49 seconds. Mike Symons set up John Mills after some good play down the left, with Mills firing a right-footed shot past the static keeper for his 34th goal of the season.

In the seventh minute, Dan Cann fired Wimborne’s first shot of the afternoon wide of the post, with Alex Harris untroubled in goal for Hereford.

But at the other end of the pitch, Hereford went close to doubling their advantage. Mark Preece was denied by the upright after getting on the end of Purdie’s corner, before Wimborne quickly cleared the danger.
Moments later, captain Rob Purdie was unlucky not to get his name on the score sheet. His initial shot was blocked by Billy Maybury, before his follow-up sailed wide of the mark.

With 17 minutes on the clock, Wimborne equalised through Tobias Holmes. Carl Preston found Holmes with a quick free kick, he carved opened the Whites’ defence and slotted the ball past Alex Harris.

In a fairly even half, there were a handful of chances for both sides. For Wimborne, in the 31st minute Luke Holmes forced Harris into making a save low down to his right, before a weak shot from Carl Preston was straight at the ex-Lydney man.

The Bulls had a couple of half chances before half time, firstly John Mills' effort from a tight angle went harmlessly behind, before Rob Purdie's shot from range whistled wide.

After a slow start to the second half, Mike Symons was pulled back by James Stokoe as he broke into the box, with the referee awarding the hosts a penalty. As usual, John Mills stepped up to take the spot kick, dispatching the ball into the back of the net to take the lead for the second time.

Four minutes later, Mills saw a shot from 10-yards saved by the feet of the keeper, and Jamie Molyneux couldn't quite get enough on the rebound to force the ball home to increase the lead.

On the hour mark, John Mills had the ball in the back of the net after beating the keeper with a tidy finish, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

In an otherwise relatively quiet second half, the visitors were awarded a penalty in the 78th minute after what appeared to be a handball within the Hereford box. Tobias Holmes managed to equalise from the spot, cheekily dinking the effort over Alex Harris.

In the remaining 10 minutes, chances were few and far between, with Mike Symons heading Rob Purdie’s free kick narrowly over the bar the closest the Bulls came to a third goal.
