Barkhuizen's contract at Morecambe was mutually cancelled earlier this month, which follows on from players receiving their wages late at the start of November.
The deal is set to go through on January 1st, with the Shrimps receiving a compensation fee for the 23 year old.
"Agreeing the pre-contract deal now, I get the opportunity to bed myself in before I can play again," Barkhuizen told BBC Sport.
"I think this will be a really good challenge for me."
Barkhuizen made 39 appearances for the Whites in the 2011/12 season whilst on loan from Blackpool.
